Chapter 1.10

Roy sat back and smiled nodding his head, “Fair enough Massoud, fair enough.”  He took no offense in this exchange.  Indeed he had a great deal of respect for the foreigner.  Roy fancied himself a good judge of potential in a man and Massoud had immediately caught his eye.  This one would go far and he was certainly not above hitching a ride with him as long as the journey were mutually beneficial.  He also had no doubts though that if he ceased to be useful Massoud would discard him, and that in a manner that would ensure he was no longer of use to anyone else with little remorse.  It was for this reason that he did not press the matter.  If Massoud wanted to include him he would.

If not?  That was OK too, though Roy was pretty sure he would.  Besides, he had his own plan he was working.  Whatever happened Roy was confident he would be in a much better position than he was now, perhaps even in a position of some significant power, perhaps even more than Massoud.

“Don’t misread me friend,” Massoud started.  He let the word friend drop to let Roy know that this was not a slight directed towards him.  “I think you may be of more use to me than I had originally anticipated.”  At this point, he paused staring at his empty mug.

Roy nodded, and reached over and knocked three times hard on the wall and within seconds two more drinks were brought in.  Massoud continued.

Massoud casually watched Roy while the drinks were coming.  Yes this one had potential, and he knew his place.  He could teach this man much.  Perhaps one day he could even stand at his side.  His decision made he continued.  “Roy, I would like you to stay with me for the meeting that I have arranged.  I will introduce you as my associate.  Listen, and talk only when necessary.  At the end of the evening, after they leave.  I want you to tell me your judgement of these two men.  If you can tell me something I do not know about these men, perhaps discern their real intent, you will have demonstrated that you have the potential.”
