Beinn Chapter 3.5

“Did you get them,” he asked whispering softly as he drew up near to the Assassin?

Duilach was more than a little surprised at being confronted by the man here and now.  How could he have found him unless he had been tracking him?  This was most disturbing, if only because he had not actually detected that he was being followed.  He had a bad feeling when he accepted this job and this only served to heighten the sense of regret he had at accepting it.  All the more reason to get this over with as soon as possible now, he thought to himself.

He met the gaze of the other and replied, “The first,”  He’s in the alley down near the tavern where they both were tonight.  The other,” he said nodding at the retreating three shadows, “Has too much company with him and in too public a place to deal with at the moment.”

The face of the stranger darkened as he listened to the words.  His next words came evenly and cooly, belying the anger that was behind them.  “Listen carefully Duilach, we have paid you very well to deal with these two.  The job will be done tonight, before the sun rises, or mark my words there shall be a price on your head open to anyone who cares to take the job.”

Duilach studied the man dispassionately as he spoke the threat.  It was not the first time someone had threatened him, nor would it be the last.  The words ended and they stared at each other in silence for too long.  They were two wild animals, vying for dominance, neither would back down.

“Are we clear?”

For a response, Duilach pressed the point of his dirk gently into the mans inner thigh, which he had placed there the moment the man had begun his speech.  He was rewarded with eyes going wide and a loss of discomposure for the briefest period of time.  A sneer began to form on the mans face as he quickly stepped back,

“Completely.”  With that Duilach turned and disappeared into the shadows.
