They rode in silence both alone with their thoughts.

Massoud turned the situation over in his mind.  He had gotten as far as he had because he left nothing to chance.  He had grown completely adept at totaling up the facts around him, looking at all the possibilities, and coming to the likely conclusions, and only then taking action.  To his mind this was too fortuitous, and Massoud was one not to believe in good luck, even though it had saved him more times than he would care to admit.  No, while he would accept this offer of help he would do so with caution.  He would watch this woman to see what was out of place.  To his mind it wasn’t a question of if, he assumed it was there.  Let her prove him wrong.  He looked up at the sun and judged they still had some time before they got to the rendezvous point.  He looked over at her and decided to probe her just a bit, to see how much she actually knew, to see just how well she knew Roy, and to see if he could detect anything out of place.

Elspeth smiled deeply the hood drawn deeply over her head completely shading her from Massoud’s view.  It was almost too easy.  It occurred to her though that this one was wise, and devious.  There were layers upon layers to him.  Yes he had agreed to let her come along, but she had no doubt he would continue to watch her closely.  No matter.  She had no concern over what he would find.  He would see only what she wanted him to see.  After all she had layers too, perhaps as many as he, perhaps more.
